When a dental crown might be necessary

Did you know that more teeth are lost through gum disease than through tooth decay? Healthy teeth depend on healthy gums to support them. The most common cause of gum disease is the bacteria contained in plaque – the sticky colourless solution that forms on teeth, roots and gums. If it’s not removed, the plaque hardens and turns into tartar which can’t be removed by brushing alone. The result is gums that become red and swollen.

Dental crowns are a type of restoration that sits over the problem tooth enclosing it from top to bottom. Usually made from porcelain, crowns are designed to protect the natural tooth, or implant beneath. Our highly skilled team can colour-match them perfectly to the shade of your natural teeth for a seamless finish.

Getting a dental crown usually requires a minimum of two visits to our dental clinic. During the first visit your tooth will be prepared to make room for the dental crown. Next an impression is taken and sent to the dental lab where your custom crown will be made. Don’t worry, we won’t leave you toothless! You’ll be fitted with a temporary crown to wear during the waiting period.

At the second visit your temporary crown is removed, and your new crown fitted and adjusted for bite, before being firmly cemented into place.

Dental Bridges – What they are and when they’re used

We’ve already mentioned that dental crowns, and dental bridges are quite different. A fixed dental bridge may be recommended when you have a single tooth or a few teeth missing in a row, and for whatever reason, you don’t want, or can’t have, dental implants.

Dental bridges usually consist of one or more crowns attached to a metal framework. These sit on top of the adjacent teeth either side of the gap. The bridging tooth/teeth then ‘span’ the gap left by the missing tooth, restoring the smile.

Having discussed whether this is the best treatment for your gapped smile, our Sunbury dentist will arrange an appointment where the abutment teeth (those at either end of the gap) are shaped in order to fit the dental crowns. An impression is then taken of your teeth so that the dental lab can craft your new replacement teeth which will make up the bridge. You’ll also be fitted with a temporary bridge to protect your exposed teeth and gums while you wait for the bridge to be made.

At the next appointment your temporary bridge will be removed, and your new bridge will be fitted in place, checked, and adjusted. You may require more than one visit in order to achieve the best possible fit and to ensure that your bite is functioning correctly.

Once both you and our dentist are happy with the fit, your dental bridge can be cemented permanently into position.

Both dental crowns and bridges can last up to 15 years or longer with good oral hygiene and regular dental check-ups.
